What is your favorite building?

What’s your favorite building, architect interview question? Everyone has one, and at some point in time during an interview, you’re going to be asked to name it. Architects are passionate about buildings, so naming your favorite can give an interviewer insight into your personality. Take a moment to consider different types of architecture when formulating your answer so you don’t bore or confuse your interviewer. Remember, too, that you don’t have to choose a famous building; there are countless beautiful structures around us that we fail to notice every day. Architecture is a field in which we all have to be doing something that contributes to society, so it’s important for us to always be working on improving our industry as a whole. What are three things you would like to see improved in your work environment?: When I work with other architects, they sometimes exhibit some unpleasant habits that disrupt my work or workflow. Here are three behaviors from other architects that I want them to stop doing: ____, ____, and ______. How do you prioritize your workload?: What criteria do you use when deciding what project should be worked on next?

Do you think computers can save us time and money while designing buildings/homes etc.?

This is a question to see how interested you are in technology. It will also determine your ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team, as well as with customers who have some computer knowledge. Architects have been slow to adopt computers, but in order to be competitive and produce quality designs, it’s becoming increasingly important for firms to consider using CAD. In fact, if you don’t have any CAD experience or aren’t interested in learning about technology, there are plenty of firms that would rather look for another candidate. That said, if you’re looking for a position at an older firm that isn’t used to working with computers or is only just beginning to implement them into their design process, then it might be better not to mention your interest in technology at all.

What was your favorite subject in school, outside of architecture classes?

Architects need to be able to communicate effectively. Your interviewer will want to test your ability to speak publicly and concisely. If you don’t enjoy speaking in front of groups, then architecture might not be a good fit for you; architects deal with clients all day long. Of course, if your answer is all of them or class time was my favorite time in school, that won’t do you any favors either. What you should say: Be honest about which subjects came easier for you; everyone has strengths and weaknesses. However, it’s best not to focus on your skill level with core math or science classes.

Tell me about your first job. (What did it entail?)

You should answer that your first job was being a server when you were in high school. You learned how to multi-task, how to prioritize tasks, and how to provide good customer service. The interviewer then wants to know if you’ve had any other jobs since then. If so, what did they entail? Did you like them? Why or why not? What did you learn from those experiences? If you’re applying for a position in an architectural firm, you can expect most of your interview questions to revolve around AutoCAD or other popular 2D & 3D architectural design software. This is because architects need to be able to clearly convey their ideas via drawings, which means they typically know their software better than non-architects. If you have no prior experience with architecture software programs, take some time and spend some money on online tutorials before your interview; failing that, make sure to bring along a tablet loaded with one of these programs so you can show your interviewer what you’re capable of.

Have you ever done any home remodeling work before? If so, what did you learn from it that might help you if hired by XYZ Co. for this position?

For example, if you have remodeled a kitchen or bath for yourself or for friends and family, make sure to emphasize those experiences in your interview.
