Why Five Rings?
Five Rings is an interview question from Japanese entrepreneur, Osamu Fujita. In it, you are given five rings that need to be threaded onto a stiff wire in order to make a bracelet. There are three things you can do with each ring: rotate it, flip it over or pass through (the correct order). The objective is to order them correctly on one thread such that when all five rings have been threaded onto one thread they form a perfect circle without any gaps between them.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
It’s a common interview question that can be hard to answer, but if you’re able to walk through how you balance your responsibilities at work and in your personal life, it could land you a job. Explain that although many companies ask about work/life balance, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, what matters most is working for an employer who recognizes that different people have different ways of coping with their professional responsibilities.
What is your biggest weakness?
Many applicants try to turn their weaknesses into strengths, but that’s not a good idea. Employers want to know what you can improve on, so they want honest answers. Discuss a major weakness that’s keeping you from reaching your goals. Then follow up with an example of how you fixed it. For example, I used to be afraid of networking events where I didn’t know anyone. But then I started going to these events anyway—and now I love them! The more you put yourself out there, the easier it gets. So if you have a fear of public speaking or cold calling, find ways to overcome those fears. And don’t forget: Just because something is difficult for you doesn’t mean everyone else will struggle with it too!

What are three things on your bucket list?
Most people already have a good idea of what their bucket list looks like. Whether it’s checking out that museum you’ve always wanted to see or skydiving off a mountaintop, most folks could rattle off a handful of goals they want to achieve in their lifetime. The problem is that people often don’t follow through on these things. To avoid becoming one of those people, we recommend taking some time once every quarter or so to sit down and revisit your bucket list.
Tell me about yourself
On your Five Rings interview, you will be asked to tell a brief story about yourself. This isn’t an opportunity to blow off steam or go on a tangent, but rather a chance to show that you have properly prepared for this interview. Give a concise answer that highlights your most relevant attributes (previous job experience, education, etc.). Keep it short and sweet—in other words, don’t ramble. Use your response as an opportunity to demonstrate why you are perfect for Five Rings.

This is a tricky question. After all, you want to explain your decision without coming across as if you’re looking for a fight. The best way to respond is to give some background information about why you left and relate it back to what you can bring to their company. Here are two possible ways to answer: After several years at my last job, I felt that it was time for me to take on more of a management role. My current boss has been very supportive in helping me develop my leadership skills. He’s given me opportunities to manage larger projects, work with other departments and increase my visibility within our organization. Everyone seems to be up in arms about these five rings interview questions, but I can tell you from experience that once you learn how to answer them well, it’s cake. I am no executive at Tesla or Space X, but my interviews had one thing in common. The interviewers didn’t ask me any riddles; they asked straightforward questions with obvious answers. It was a matter of learning what each question was looking for and giving that answer promptly and confidently. If you’re nervous, take a deep breath before answering. If your mind goes blank, just say something like that’s an interesting question and then think through your response. Remember: You’re not being judged on your answer, only on how confident you are in delivering it. Good luck!

Can you tell me about that project? How did that happen? How long did it take? What were some things that helped, or made it challenging? What would your co-workers say about you?
If there’s one universal truth about five rings interview questions, it’s that you can learn more about a candidate by asking his co-workers what they think of him. The company has already done its research on you—now is your chance to do some research on them. Learn everything you can about their culture, as well as where they’re headed as a company, and come up with a few key points that will really resonate with them. Do they value teamwork? Are they forward-thinking? Do they strive for innovation? Think through how you would describe yourself in terms of these characteristics, and then make sure your five rings interview answers match up. Be honest, but don’t forget to paint yourself in a positive light!

Travel is like education. It’s been said that you can get more out of it if you go prepared, but even if you don’t, some of it sinks in, or else where would all those backpackers be? What are your favorite places to travel to? Why do they stand out for you? If a place were just a place then traveling wouldn’t be as much fun as it is. So, tell me about one of your favorite places to travel to. Where is it? When did you go there last? And why does it stand out from other places you’ve traveled too?

Now it’s time to talk about your most difficult experience as an applicant or co-op student (or even as an employee). What was going on in your life at that time? How did you react?
